Poonjar PalaceThe history of Poonjar Palace

The Poonjar Palace was built by the Poonjar rulers, very old dynasty that was linked with Travancore royal family. The palace has 600 years of history. Poonjar dynasty was founded by Manavikrama Kulashekhara Perumal, whose origin was from the Pandyans of the Sangam Age. In 1152 AD, he shifted from Madurai following never-ending civil quarrels in Tamil state. Manavikrama Kulashekhara Perumal carried one of the three idols of Meenakshi, their family deity, and the deity was installed in the Meenakshi temple on the banks of the Meenachil River.

Manavikraman Raja obtained the land from the Thekkancoor Rajas and made Erattupetta as their commercial center.
