Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary


Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is one among twelve Wild Life Sanctuaries among the protected areas of Kerala. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is located at a distance of 97 Km from Idukki and 10 Km from Marayur towards north on State Highway SH-17.

Chinnar Wildlife SanctuaryChinnar wildlife Sanctuary situated within the rain shadow area of Western Ghats and it is the second home for the rare Grizzled Big Squirrel in India. The sanctuary has the rare throny scrub forest which has xerophytic species.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated at an altitude ranging between 500 meters and 2400 meters. The major peaks of this sanctuary are Malai (1863 meters) and Viriyoottu Malai (1845 meters). Unlike other wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala, The average rainfall of Chinnar Wildlife sanctuary is 100 mm. That means it rains here only for 2 months in a year.


Flora and Fauna of Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary

The major portion of this sanctuary is covered with grassland with several patches of Shola. The sanctuary is rich in wildlife, with mixed deciduous forests. The place is ideal for trekking.

The major species in the throny scrub forests are Acacia Arabica, Acacia Leucofolia, Acacia Concinna, Prosporis Juliflora, and Opuntia Dillenii. High Shola and Wetland species include Rhododendron Nilagiricum, Elaeocarpus, Recurvatus, Strobilanthus Kunthianus etc. Dry deciduous species include Santallum Album, Anogeissus Latifolia, Terminalia Arjuna, Tamarindus Indica, Pongamia Glabra, Dalbergia Latifolia, Tectona Grandis, Lagerstroemia Laneolata, Cassia Fistula, Terminalia Bellerica, Emblica Officianalis etc. The sanctuary also houses the famous Marayoor Sandalwood Forests.

The Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary houses 34 different species of Mammals. Elephant, Gaur, Panther, Bonnet Macaque, Nilgiri Thar, Spotted Deer, Sambar, Grizzled Giant Squirrel, Hanuman monkey are few common mammals found in this sanctuary. The sanctuary has about 245 species of Birds including Peacock, Kingfisher, Yellow-Throated Bulbul, Myna, woodpeckers and many more. It houses 36 species of reptiles. This is also an ideal place for watching herds of gaur and elephants amble past.

Grizzled Giant Squirrel: With the best efforts of the sanctuary the population of rare species of Grizzled Giant Squirrels is now more than 240, world's second largest population of Grizzled Giant Squirrels.

Thoovanam Waterfalls: Deep inside in the sanctuary the attractive Thoovanam Waterfall is the major attraction of this place.

Watch Tower: From the high Watch Tower you may enjoy the mesmerizing birds-eye view of the entire park.
