Peechi Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary


Peechi Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Thrissur district. This Wildlife Sanctuary is regarded as the second oldest wildlife sanctuaries of Kerala. It was established in the year 1958. Since the sanctuary situated in the catchments regions of Peechi and Vazhani dams in Thrissur District, it is named as Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary. It consists of Palappilli and Nelliyampathi forests.

Peechi Vazhani Wildlife SanctuaryThe Peechi Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of about 125 Sq Km. The altitude ranges from 45 meters to 900 meters. The highest peak in the sanctuary is Ponmudi which is 923 meters high. The average annual rainfall is about 3000 mm. Temperature ranges between 15 degree centigrade and 38 degree centigrade.

Peechi Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary has a large variety of forests, including Moist Deciduous Forest, Evergreen forests and Semi-evergreen forests. Common tree species include Erythrina Indica, Eugenia Hemispheria, Dalbergia Latifolia, Palanquium Ellipticum, Mesua Ferrea, Cullenia Excelsa, Dipterocarpus Indicus, Hopea Parviflora, Dysoxylum Malabaricum, Cedrella Toona, Bombax Ceiba, Syzygium Cumini, Largerstroemia Lanceolata, Adina Cordifolia, Albizzia Procera, Alstonia Scholaris Dalbergia Latifolia, Xylia Xylocarpa Etc. More than 50 different orchids and numerous rare medicinal plants can also be seen at this sanctuary.

Peechi Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary is home to variety of local as well as migratory birds, together with a surplus of other animals. Many varieties of mammals, approximately 60 varieties of birds in addition to 10 varieties of reptiles stay at this place. Wild animals such as leopard, tiger, vixens and grass eaters like deer, elks and barking deer could be usually seen at this place. Bison as well as elephants can also be viewed here, but just at the center of this forest. Large herds of spotted deer going around greens are a typical scene at this place. In other areas of this reserved forest elks may be seen in great numbers.

Peechi Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary is also a wonderful location for trekking as well as for going for a nature walk. Nature camps are done frequently in sanctuary. If you are planning for trekking into the forest, you have to obtain prior permission from the forest department. There are walkthroughs arranged by forest department, with the wilds, so to get tourists might be well familiar with all the surroundings along with the wild animals that live here.

The nearby attractions of Peechi Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary include Vadakkumnathan Temple, Archeological Museum, Shakthan Thampuram Palace and Peechi dam.

Best season to visit is between November and April.
