Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary


Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the important wildlife sanctuaries of Kerala and it is located at a distance of 42 Km North-East of Thiruvananthapuram. The Wildlife Sanctuary was formed in the 1983.

Peppara Wildlife SanctuaryThe Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is situated at an altitude ranging from 100 to 1717 meters in Nedumangad taluk of Thiruvananthapuram district. The major peaks of this sanctuary are Chemmunjimottai (1717 meters), Athirumalai (1594 meters), Arumukhamkunnu (1457 meters), Koviltherimalai (1313 meters) and Nachiyadikunnu (957 meters).

Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary has spread across total area of 53 Sq Km and it consists of Part of Palode Reserve, spread across 24 Sq Km and part of Kottoor Reserve spread across 29 Sq Km. The total water spread of the reservoir is 5.82 Sq Km.


The Following major forest types are recognized in the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary.

Southern hilltop Tropical Evergreen: This type of forest is of stunted evergreen, is located above 1000 meters on the top of hills. They are exposed to heavy wind and less favorable soil and climatic conditions.

West Coast Semi-Evergreen: This is a middle zone found in between evergreen and moist deciduous, this type of forest typically found in the hill slopes from 150 to 1050 meters.

Southern Moist Mixed Deciduous Forests: This type of forest covers more than 60% of the tract along the lower slopes of hills.


Wildlife at Peppara:

The Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary houses major mammals including elephant, gaur, sambar, barking deer, mouse deer, wild boar, tiger, panther, wild dog, lion tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, Malabar squirrel etc.

The Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is also home for more than 233 types of Birds. Water birds like darter, little cormorant, pied king fisher and egrets are also seen here.

Different types of snakes including the king cobra and python are also found in this sanctuary. The area has a different types of moth as well as butterflies.


The Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary constitutes the catchments of Peppara Dam built across River Karamana plus commissioned during the year 1983 to enhance the drinking water supply to Thiruvananthapuram city as well as surrounding areas.

Best Time to Visit: Between January and March

Special Attractions include Trekking to forest area - Bonafalls, Vazahuvanthole waterfalls, Kalarkad waterfalls and visit to settlement areas etc.,
