Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple


Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple is one of the important places of worship in Kerala located in the heart of Kottayam. The history of this temple dates back to 500 years. This temple was built by Thekkumkoor Raja in 16th century.

Thirunakkara Mahadeva TempleThe place is a hill identified as "Nakkara Kunnu" in the regional language Malayalam. Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple located on the hill and the hill is believed to be a sacred hill by Hindus, for this reason the hill is regarded as "Thiru" and "Nakkara" literally means "Sacred Nakkara Hill".

The Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is significant for its traditional architecture as well as wonderful murals. Therefore the temple is recognized for its South Indian style of architecture.

The Koothambalam of this temple is regarded as one of the best of the state. The walls of this temple are adorned with attractive paintings that are scenes belonging to the Hindu epics.

The Koothambalam located at the premises of Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple, a platform to perform a number of temple art forms, is considered as one of the best in Kerala. At the time of Phalguna Utsavam, the annual festival which lasts for 10 days, numerous folk art varieties such as Mayilattom as well as Velakali are played in the temple premises. One more major attraction of this festival is all night Kathakali show on third and fourth days of festival.

Dhara and Chathsatha are the main offerings here.
